Happy New Year!
If you are anything like me, you’ve been thinking about what you want for this New Year. It is easy to set goals, but it’s hard to reach them – unless you set authentic goals. Authentic goals speak to your heart. They excite you. There is a meaningful purpose to them. If you want that type of goal, there is an important question to ask yourself before you ever set the goal:
What is the “feeling” you want to have more of this year?
Do you want to feel more energized? Relaxed? Healthier? Happier? More peace? A greater sense of accomplishment? Pinpoint the feeling you’re after, and make that your theme for the year. Then, you can set a goal based on what will give you more of that feeling.
For example, the feeling I want this year is “margin.” I want more time between projects and appointments – more space to savor the love and life around me. So one of my goals is to cross some things off of my list of activities to create more margin, and eliminate the feeling of running from one activity to the next. Just imagining more margin in my life makes me feel excited about tackling the goal.
So what’s the feeling you want to have more of this year?
I’d love to hear about it in the comments. This simple coaching question is such a great tool because it invites you to pinpoint the “why” of your goals before you identify the “what.” If we are to persevere, purpose must always precede vision.
