Here’s a word that can stop you in your tracks: accountability.

When you hear the word “accountability,” you probably don’t get excited. It’s not exactly a fun word. Words like “vision” and “happiness” can leave us daydreaming.

But accountability is sobering. It’s where the hard work is non-negotiable. Intimidating, even. In fact, when you think of accountability, you might think of questions such as…

Did you hold your team accountable?
Are you holding yourself accountable to your goal?
Who was accountable for this mistake?

It’s no wonder we see accountability as a punishment rather than a tool. But if you are ready to be consistent and get the results you want when it comes to closing the gap between where you are and where you want to be, it’s essential to change your relationship with the word “accountability.”

Think of a change you want to make that is really important to you but has somehow felt elusive. Perhaps it is around getting healthier or saving more money or going back to school, or even improving your parenting. Whatever it is, accountability will create the consistency to close the gap between where you are and where you really want to be. If you have seen accountability as a negative, start seeing it as a positive – the missing piece of your success puzzle.
