A common misconception is that talent is the key to moving forward and becoming successful. While it is important, there’s another trait that matters more.
In my bestselling book, Successful Women Think Differently, I address this exact topic. To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, we’re continuing with our series detailing the nine habits that will make you happier, healthier, and more resilient.
Today I’m sharing Habit #4: Build the muscle of self-control.
It’s not the most glamorous, but it’s critical. In order to be successful, you need to be able to be consistent and disciplined about what you do.
Studies showed that in children, grit and self-control are better predictors than IQ scores of success in college and beyond.
So, what are the simple things you could do to be more disciplined and have more self control?
Intentionally set your mind to do it.
You’ll overwhelm yourself if you try to do too much at once; you have a limited amount of self control and willpower, so make sure you laser focus…
What would make the biggest difference if you were disciplined about it? Narrow your priorities down.
If you set your mind and willpower on achieving one thing, you can avoid goal fatigue.
You will begin to notice that discipline changes how you show up and how you succeed at the things that really matter.
Talent is not enough. The trait that will take you to the top is self control. But, you only have so much of it. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many goals at once.
Choose what’s most important to you and laser focus on it.
